Abu Dhabi Blood Bank celebrates World Blood Donor Day

ABU DHABI: Abu Dhabi Blood Bank celebrated World Blood Donor Day on 15th June, with a number of activities taking place across the emirate to increase awareness of the importance of donating blood.

Throughout the month of June the blood bank has also intensified blood drives and raised awareness amongst schools, clinics and companies to help encourage the public to donate blood.

According to Dr. Naima Oumeziane, Head of Abu Dhabi Blood Bank, as many as three people can be saved by each unit of blood.

“Blood not only makes many medical and surgical procedures possible, but also saves the lives of accident victims, and cancer, cardiac and transplant patients among others. Blood is traditionally in short supply during the summer months here, due to holiday and travel schedules, and Ramadan in particular is a difficult month for blood centres to collect blood donations, which is why it s so important to celebrate and highlight World Blood Donor Day,” Dr. Oumeziane said.

As part of the celebration, 50 blood donors were recognised for their positive contribution in ensuring a safe blood supply to the country at an awards ceremony at Emirates Palace, sponsored by the hotel and Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, Etisalat, ADIB, ZADCO, Department of Transport and Bunduq.

More than 25 partners across Abu Dhabi, including national and private companies, universities, schools and associations participated in the campaign to encourage their staff to donate blood.
