Al Montazah lifeguards achieve aquatic acclaim

SHARJAH: The Al Montazah Lifeguard team has plenty to be proud of as participants at this year’s Coega Sunwear Mina Mile Open Water Swim Series.

The Sharjah Water Park’s expert swimmers bagged both a silver and a bronze medal at the 9th return of the contest, which was held at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort and Marina, Dubai. Warren van der Merwe, Managing Director of Super Sports Academies, congratulated the team on their accomplishments, saying, “With over 250 swimmers entering the different races on the morning, it was great to see the lifeguards from Al Montazah participate and also win some overall and age group podium positions. I look forward to welcoming them back in March for race 2.” The main event featured a one mile (1600 meters) race with four age divided categories for both male and female participants, whilst a 200m swim was a highlight for the younger competitors.

There were also 400m and 800m races in tandem with the main event for those unable to attend the one-mile swim, as well as a 3x100m relay event in which families, swim clubs, schools and companies could compete.

Al Montazah’s Aldrian Reyes earned 2nd place and a silver medal in the 400 metre Men’s Division, with fellow teammate Pulindha Sikkadu close behind him in 3rd place, securing bronze.

Sikkadu also won 6th place in the 800 metre race, with Umesh Range in 9th place and Suresh Gamage in 11th.

Fast female swimmers Shamika Hansani and Hasintara Mohomad attained 6th and 8th places respectively in the 400m. Dilki Kumari had a near bronze, with 4th place in the 800 metre Ladies’ Division, while Hansani obtained 8th place and Mohomad 10th place in the same race.

Reyes once again made waves by scoring 5th place in the 1600 metre race. Sikkadu came in 10th, and Range came in 15th.

In the long distance Ladies’ division, Kumari bagged 6th place, making her the solo achiever for Al Montazah in the 1600 metres.

Khalid Al Qaseer, General-Manager of Al Montazah Amusement and Water Park was thrilled with the lifeguard team’s stellar performance. “We are extremely proud of our team of strong swimmers and of their outstanding results in this competition. At Al Montazah fun may be our focus, but providing the best international safety standards is our top priority, and I think that our lifeguards have proven just that today.”
