Amir of Kuwait vows to spare no effort for protecting Kuwait, urges for speedy reforms

Kuwait, 27th October, 2015 (WAM) – His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, in his address on Tuesday to the National Assembly’s fourth session of its 14th legislative term, pledged that no effort would be spared for “protecting our dear homeland” and urged both the Government and the Parliament to take speedy measures to complete economic reforms and slash public expenditures.
His Highness the Amir addressed in particular economic and security hazards and problems currently facing Kuwait.
On basis of safeguarding the national unity “we will never allow seditions and spread of hatred or fomenting the hateful sectarianism or exploiting tribal, racial or class strife,” His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad vowed.
Stressing that individuals’ misdeeds must not be viewed as representing whole communities, His Highness the Amir said, “I as the father of all, ask you and all the citizens to be aware of the dangers threatening our security, with the necessity of maintaining our national unity and participating in the protection of the homeland.
“We shall spare neither efforts nor funds for sake of protecting our national security, bolstering the security apparatuses and enhancing their capacities.”
Kuwait’s security is part of the GCC security network “and any threat aimed at any Council’s state also targets Kuwait’s security and we should all join hands to resist it.
“This was embodied when Kuwait was targeted with the flagrant aggression and occupation in 1990, and this was explicitly affirmed recently with the dangerous threats against security of the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is the security of us all.” The GCC states, His Highness continued, have hastily taken effective action, taking part in the military operation, bravely led by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, for protecting security of the Kingdom and legitimacy in Yemen.
He called for boosting the brotherly ties among the GCC states in the hope of realizing pan-Arab consensus “that may salvage the nation from the abyss and restore its pride and immunity.”
Turning to economic challenges facing Kuwait, His Highness the Amir reminded the attendees, as well as the public, that he had warned of repercussions of the existing spending habits and mounting government expenditures, at expense of development.
“Oil prices have resulted in slump of the State income by 60 percent, however the public spending proceeded unchanged and without any cut, to be in tune with the falling oil prices, thus leading to the State budget deficit, which is a burden on it and a limit to our development aspirations,” His Highness the Amir said, therefore, “there must be speedy, serious and urgent measures to complete the economic reforms and attain their objectives, namely with slashing the public spending and confronting effectively the defects in our national economy, for any delays will lead to aggravating the situation thus greater efforts and higher costs will be warranted.”
“While I declare in front of you facts and ramifications of the crisis, I ask the government and the assembly to take urgent reform measures and I affirm that they be a good example in terms of punctuality and abidance by schedules .. this is an opportunity to be seized to correct our economic approach, seeking other sources of income and bolstering our resources and capacity,” His Highness said.
His Highness renewed the call for reforms, indicating that State would ensure that neither the citizens’ income nor the fund for the next generations would be affected with the aspired tight-belt policies.
