General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments attends International Conference on Countering Extremism and Terrorism

CAIRO: The General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, has participated with the high-profile delegation led by Dr. Mohammed Mattar Salem Al Ka’abi, Chairman of the Authority, at the International Conference on Countering Extremism and Terrorism, organised by Al-Azhar, Egypt.

Addressing the conference, Dr. Al Ka’abi unveiled the UAE’s practical and executive mechanisms to tackle the extremism and terrorism.

He expressed his satisfaction of taking part at the conference, which coincided with the UAE’s 43rd national day anniversary celebrations, commending the founding father of the UAE the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, whose legacy is sustained by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Supreme Council Members, Their Highnesses, the Rulers of Emirates and His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

Dr. Al Ka’abi stressed the UAE leadership and people’s unwavering support to Egyptian government and people, hailing the fundament role of al-Azhar in strengthening moderation in the Arab and Muslim world, especially in this critical stage of incitement, sectarianism and terrorism. He decried the claims of extremists who try to highjack the religion under the pretext of setting up an Islamic state.

He called on the religious scholars and competent institutions to retrieve the Islamic discourse from the manipulative extremists so as to highlight the true image of Islam and its noble values.

Dr. Al Ka’abi briefed the conferees about the Authority’s experience in the UAE regarding streamlining the religious discourse to tackle the extremism and fanaticism, noting that this strategy is backed by the wise UAE leadership and people. He added that laws have been enacted to develop the religious awareness in accordance with the moderation course that highlights the religious and cultural role of the Mosques based on co-existence and tolerance.

He added that the Authority publishes the Friday sermon on its website, whose visitors exceed over 2.5 million, adding that the UAE boosts the moderation course in its efforts to uproot the extremists who lure youths into a quagmire of terrorism and crime allegedly in the name of Islam.

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmad Al-Tayeb and Coptic Pope Tawadros II inaugurated the international conference for countering extremism and terrorism in Cairo on Wednesday.

The conference was opened in the presence of an international array of religious scholars.
