Halep beats Pliskova to claim Dubai Duty Free Tennis title

DUBAI, 22nd February, 2015 (WAM) — Top seed Simona Halep fought off a strong challenge from Karolina Pliskova to win the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title yesterday, winning 6-4 7-6(4).

HRH Princess Haya bint Al Hussein, wife of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, presented the trophy in the presence of Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, President of Tennis Emirates, Sheikh Abdulla bin Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Micky Lawler, WTA President, and other dignitaries.

The match was a tense battle from beginning to end, with just one break of serve deciding the opening set. Pliskova had the first opportunity to break, for 3-1, but instead it was Halep who broke at love for a 4-3 lead.

The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free and held under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, continues with the ATP event which takes place between 23rd and 28th February and features four of the top five players in the world.
