MoEW plans to increase organic farming acreage by 5% a year

Dubai, 16th February, 2015 (WAM) — The Ministry of Environment and Water is planning to increase acreage under organic farming by five percent annually as part of its strategic plan for 2014-2016, a senior official said during a workshop organised by the Ministry to discuss mechanisms to implement Cabinet Resolution No 7682014 regarding regulation of import and trade of organic input, seeds and food.

Fatima Al Kalbani, Acting Director of Health and Agricultural Development at the Ministry, said the Ministry had put in place the legal framework as required by the resolution and was encouraging farmers to use organic fertilisers, seeds, pesticides and other materials.

The Ministry’s consistent efforts, she added, had led to a marked increase in the organic farming area from 200 hectares to 4,286 hectares in the last three years.

She noted that 62 organic products had been marketed at a cost of AED7 million last year.

The Ministry holds regular workshops as part of its integrated training programme aimed at providing the best technical information and guidance to farmers who wish to adopt the organic agriculture system.
