Mohamed bin Zayed: UAE pressing ahead with supporting humanitarian schemes

ABU DHABI: His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces has re-affirmed UAE’s commitment to supporting humanitarian works all over the world.

This came during a telephone conversation today with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. During the conversation.

“We are key partners of the UN and related organisations in supporting humanitarian and charitable works, particularly relief operations in different countries of the world,” he said.

Sheikh Mohamed added that under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE had always been in the forefront, extending hands of support through numerous humanitarian projects and initiatives to alleviate suffering in different parts of the world, to strengthen fraternity and friendship and to sustain principles of peace and co-existence among people of the world.

Sheikh Mohamed said that along with its continuous support to the UN’s relief programmes, the UAE has its own initiatives for assisting the needy and affected people.

During the call, Sheikh Mohamed and Ban Ki Moon discussed ways of enhancing cooperation between the UAE and the UN in providing humanitarian and developmental assistance to the different countries.

They also discussed the crisis of the World Food Programme’s budget and its implications on the conditions of the Syrian refugees, exacerbated by a blockade that prevents 212,000 people inside Syria from getting relief by different organisations.

The conversation also touched on Gaza and the international re-construction and development projects there, as well as regional issues, including developments in Yemen and Libya which cast their shadow on the region’s stability and security and the role the UN could play in finding suitable solutions to the security problems, fighting terrorism and extremism and promoting peace and tolerance.

Sheikh Mohamed expressed concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria in the light of escalating violence and systematic and indiscriminate targeting of civilians, including elderly, women and children. He reiterated UAE’s commitment to supporting Syrian people and to helping ease their plight.

He also voiced concern over developments related to Jerusalem with the stalemate in the peace process due to Israeli obstinacy.

“Such obstinacy, coupled with absence of progress in finding political solution and lack of positive attitude by the Israeli side, is responsible for the recurring violence that targets people who live constantly under threat.” Sheikh Mohamed renewed UAE’s support to the Palestinian cause and to the Palestinian people.

He praised the UN’s efforts to provide appropriate financial resources to several humanitarian issues and expressed the hope that all countries will contribute to achieving the organisation’s noble goals and will stand by the affected countries in need of humanitarian support.

Ban Ki Moon lauded the UAE’s continuous support to the UN activities aimed at providing secure and decent living conditions to the people of the world.
