Egypt’s presidential spokesperson Alaa Yousuf said the President reaffirmed the vital role of Muslim scholars which, he stressed, had become doubly significant currently when the need is to promote the true moderate and tolerant image of Islam and to confront the fierce campaign against Islam.
Currently, he affirmed, scholars have a direct responsibility to spread the genuine message of Islam and raise awareness among Muslims and speak up against extremist and warped ideology.
He also praised the role being played by Al Azhar Al Sharif to promote tolerant Islamic teachings in his capacity, providing a platform to vouch for moderation and tolerance in the Islamic World.
For his part, the Grand Imam of Al Azhar said there should be a complete distinction between Islam, its principles, culture and civilisational values and a few groups that do not represent the majority of the peaceful Muslims who are open to other peoples of the world.
He affirmed the need for confronting the terrorist ideology through an integrated network of state and society actors.
”There is a need for reforming the religious discourse to truly reflect the essence of Islam and its Sharia,” he added, underscoring that Muslims in the present reality must avert attempts to create divisions and discord and must stand united against terrorist and extremist hate mongers.
The audience credited Egypt’s honourable role over times in promoting noble values and teachings of Islam and standing against ideologies that deviated from these.
The meeting discussed efforts being made by the Council to confront terrorism and extremist ideology. The Council sent peace convoys to many countries to promote the tolerant Islam and its denunciation of any ideas inciting hatred and violence.
The presidential spokesperson quoted the President as having stated that the present situation requires all Muslims to glorify the space wherein understanding and convergence happens to quash any allegations that could link Islam with terrorism and extremism.
”Islam respects the freedom of faith and worship for all mankind,” the President affirmed.
The president said Egypt’s support for Al Azhar is essential and vital and its role should be amplified so as not to sum up religion in narrowed conceptions.
