U.A.E. Suqia initiative raises AED60.2m on second day

DUBAI: The U.A.E. Suqia Water Aid initiative launched by Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, on the occasion of the Holy Month of Ramadan to provide clean water for five million people worldwide, on Sunday raised more than AED60.250,000.

The amount, offered by individual and corporate donors on the second day of U.A.E. Suqia, is enough to buy clean water for around 1.07 million people in the targeted countries hit by water scarcity due to drought.

Yesterday, the campaign raised AED33.5 million, an amount enough to provide clean water for more than 1.3 million people.

Today’s top donors to the campaign include Investment Corporation of Dubai AED6 million, followed by Nakheel, Wasl properties, Emirates Airline who donated AED5 million each, Dubai’s Ports Customs and Free Zone Corporation (AED2 million), Union Co-op AED1.25 million (to fund the digging of 50 water wells in developing countries), Sheikha Alya bint Khalifa Al Maktoum (AED1 million), Lulu Hyper Market (AED1 million) and Dubai Land Department (AED0,5 million).

According to World Health Organisation (WHO), 3.4 million people, mostly children, die annually from water-related diseases.
