UAE National Rally Championship can drive the sport to bright future, says Sulayem

DUBAI: Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE, said today that rallying in the Emirates is entering the New Year with a bright future.

Sulayem hailed the new UAE National Rally Championship, launched by the Emirates Motorsport Club (EMC), as an outstanding success, and said the series can go from strength to strength.

The FIA Vice President joined EMC founder and President Sheikh Abdullah Al Qassimi to present trophies at the official prize giving for the new national championship at the Ajman Palace Hotel on Monday night.

“Rallying is where the motor sport in the UAE began, and Sheikh Abdullah and his team have done a great job to establish a new national championship for conventional rally cars. which can help drive the sport forward in the years ahead.” said Sulayem.

“We now have two thriving national championships, and the ATCUAE looks forward to working closely with the Emirates Motorsport Club to ensure rallying continues to grow, particularly by attracting more Emirati competitors.” Organised by the ATCUAE and the Emirates Motor Sport Federation and now in its second season, the Emirates Desert Championship has quickly established itself as a highly popular Baja desert rally series for 4WD cars, buggies, quads and bikes. Round 4 of the 2014-15 series takes place on 16 January.

Veteran driver Michel Saleh won the Group N title in the inaugural UAE National Rally Championship, while the other main prize winners were Ali Al Shawi (T1), Ahmad Al Fahim (T3) and Khalid Al Hamadani (T2).
