An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale hit the South Sandwich Islands, one of the British Overseas Territories in the South Atlantic Ocean.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Center reported that the tremor occurred at a depth of 47 km.
There have been no reports of human loss or material damage.
