Al Mazmi holds UAE flag during Youth Olympic Games ceremony

BUENOS AIRES, Latifa Al Mazmi held the UAE flag during the opening ceremony of the 3rd Youth Olympic Games held on Saturday evening in Buenos Aires. The Youth Olympic Games will see the participation of 4,000 athletes representing 206 countries competing in 28 games.

The UAE’s National Olympic Committee delegation, NOC, consists of 17 athletes, participating in five sporting events.

The delegation is headed by Talal Al Shanqeeti, NOC Acting Secretary-General, Mohammed bin Darwish, Executive Director of the NOC, and Ahmed Al Tayyeb, Director of Technical and Sports Affairs of the NOC as Chef de Mission.

The athletes will participate in 5 different games, including equestrian with Omar Abdulaziz Al Marzouqi in show jumping competition, Mohammed Adil Al Hajri and Rima Mohammed Al Hilo in golf, Latifa Al Mazmi in 10m rifle marksmanship, Sarah Al Ameri in 59kg Karate, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Montasir Al Qassimi and May Al Madani in weightlifting.

Latifa Al Mazmi kicks-off the UAE participation in the Youth Olympic Games when she competes in the shooting competition, held at Technopolis Park.

The UAE National Olympic Committee delegation also participated in the Olympic Business Forum, organised by the International Olympic Committee for two days at the Convention Centre, and on the sidelines of the 3rd Youth Olympic Games. The President of Argentina and Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, IOC, opened the ceremony.

In his welcoming speech at the start of the forum, Bach greeted the participants, stressed the importance of applying the principle of gender equality in the Olympics at the sports and administrative levels, and highlighted the role of IOC and its partners in empowering women to achieve full equality. Bach also reported on doping abuses and its danger to athletes, underscoring that it is a clear violation of sports laws.

Bach also noted that sports is a powerful tool for peace and that the Olympic Truce is being promoted, in coordination with the United Nations.
