About 40 people, most of them children, are reported to have died as a result of the outbreak of a disease suspected to be cholera in Hara and Kafijiba villages of Dutse LGA of Jigawa State.

Daily Trust learnt that the outbreak was first reported over a month ago and since then children have been dying with the latest one recorded on Saturday.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Magaji Uba Jahun, however said there was no such case in the state.

“As far as the ministry is concerned, there is no such problem in the state. We have a surveillance team and their work is to report such cases so that experts will be sent to ascertain the problem for action”, he said.

But the village head of Hara, Salisu Idris, told Daily Trust that the deaths recorded in his village followed the outbreak of a disease characterized by vomiting and diarrhoea.

He said within 30 days there was hardly a day without the death of a child in the neighbouring communities, and some families had lost as many as three children.

Idris said there was a well in the village which served as the only source of drinking water though he was not sure the disease was a result of contamination of drinking water.
