DoT announces Completion of Road Works of Ras Al Akhdar and Bainunah Street Project

Abu Dhabi: The Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi announced today the completion of road works of Ras Al Akhdar area and Bainunah Street Project.

The DoT commenced work on the comprehensive project in 2011 to improve and support the traffic flow and infrastructure in Ras Al Akhdar and Al Bateen areas.

This project is in line with the DoT’s overall strategy to enhance and develop a world class transport infrastructure in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The project includes the development of two tunnels, the Bainunah tunnel and Etihad tunnel. Consisting of two lanes leading to Sultan bin Zayed Street, the Bainunah tunnel extends to 750 meters in length and 6.5 meters in height. The tunnel is set to improve and upgrade the overall infrastructure and traffic flow on Bainunah Street and to accommodate greater traffic capacity serving Hazza bin Zayed Street and Sultan bin Zayed Street.

As for the Etihad tunnel located at Ras Al Akhdar area, it extends to 240 meters in length with a height of 5.5 meters. The two-lanes tunnel leads directly into the Etihad Towers. The tunnel is designed in “U” shape and decorated with an Islamic pattern, a symbol of the country’s culture and heritage. The Etihad tunnel will improve and compliment the public transport network to meet the ever-increasing urban development in Ras Al Akhdar area.

Both state-of-the-art tunnels were designed following the highest international standards for roads and tunnels development. The tunnels feature a control centre including Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) that manage traffic flow as well as Supervisory Control ‘&’ Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for the control of an advanced fire fighting system, storm water drainage system and ventilation system. As for the tunnels lighting, it adheres to the highest levels of sustainability and can be automatically adjusted according to the natural lighting intensity.

The project also includes expanding a part of Bainunah Street to four lanes, including a dedicated bus lane on both sides to encourage public transport by providing faster travel time for public transport users. As well, the project encompasses improvement of the traffic capacity on part of Corniche Road and Sultan Bin Zayed Street.

In addition, zebra crossings have been placed in all intersections across Bainunah Street and Ras Al Akhdar along with pedestrian walking signals.

While the infrastructure project is completed; the area’s landscaping and natural aesthetics will finish by the end of the year.
