Due to repeated violations.. Riyadh and Washington suspend the Jeddah talks on Sudan

Riyadh and Washington suspended the Jeddah talks on Sudan as a result of the repeated violations of the short-term ceasefire, and the recent extension of the ceasefire, by the Sudanese forces and the Rapid Support Forces.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America are co-sponsors to the Jeddah talks, as these violations impeded the delivery of humanitarian aid and the restoration of basic services, which is the main objective of the short-term ceasefire.

Also, during the temporary cessation of discussions, the sponsors remind both warring parties that they are still committed, according to the Jeddah Declaration of May 11, regarding the protection of civilians in Sudan and the extension of the ceasefire for a period of 5 days, starting from May 29.

The facilitators also informed the parties of the steps they would need to take to demonstrate their serious commitment to the Jeddah talks.

In addition, the two sides specifically communicated the confidence-building measures they want the other side to implement before resuming the Jeddah talks. Saudi Arabia and the United States are ready to reconvene the Jeddah talks once the parties take the necessary steps.

Despite the fact that the ceasefire was not fully implemented, the first 7-day ceasefire led to some reduction in the intensity of the fighting, which enabled humanitarian aid to reach about two million Sudanese and give them a measure of respite.

However, both sides committed serious ceasefire violations. This included the occupation of civilian homes, private businesses, public buildings, and hospitals, as well as air and artillery strikes, attacks, and prohibited movements.

It should also be noted that these violations directly affected efforts to deliver humanitarian aid. Since the start of hostilities on 15 April, 115 vehicles have been stolen and 57 warehouses and 55 offices have been looted. During the ceasefire period, humanitarian aid trucks were prevented from passing and warehouses were looted in areas controlled by both sides.
