Emirates Publishers Association explores Author Publisher interplay

_: Panel discussion held on the sidelines of Sharjah International Book Fair SHARJAH: Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi today attended a discussion panel titled “The Relation between Author and Publisher” held at the Literary Forum on the sidelines of the 31st Sharjah International Book Fair.

The two speakers, the author Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Head of Emirates Writers Union – Abu Dhabi branch and publisher Jamal Al Shehhi Founder and CEO of Kuttab Publishing, explored various points of agreement and disagreement between writers and publishers.

The two speakers commended the role played by the Emirates Publishers Association in supporting publishers, serving the UAE’s literary scene and vibrant publishing industry, as well as in creating an excellent climate for development and growth. They said that the relatively new publishing industry in the UAE is booming with the EPA’s support and in the light of many initiatives, opportunities, awards and activities being undertaken in the country.

The EPA is keen to bring writer and publisher together to exchange views and address the challenges that they face. The panel was organized with the aim to encourage and exchange positive ideas and experiences that will help the EPA achieve its goals and ensure the UAE’s leading position in the publishing industry.

The speakers summarized the importance of creating fruitful collaboration between publishers and writers by establishing specialized publishing houses and pointed out the need to actively develop the distribution sector. The speakers also discussed ways to nurture creative writers and authors and so that their potential may be fully realized. In addition, the discussion touched on methods to benefit from experience of countries with advanced and successful publishing and authorship traditions in order to drive the local industry to excellence and help achieve its aspirations.

The discussion panel is the second for the EPA in the Sharjah International Book Fair following a panel titled “Translating a Book, between Reality and Challenges”, in which the challenges inherent in translation were discussed and various suggestions were studied with the aim to enable this important sector to transmit the science and culture required to the overall development process.
