Emirati parliamentary division participates in IPU event on CEDAW

ABU DHABI, Mira Sultan Al Suwaidi, member of the Federal National Council (FNC) and member of the Emirati Parliamentary Division at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), participated in a virtual event, titled, ” Involving Parliaments in the Implementation of the CEDAW Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women,” hosted by IPU on Thursday.

During the event, Al Suwaidi highlighted the UAE’s achievements in women’s empowerment, as well as its legislation, resolutions and strategies aimed at supporting the overall role of women in the community, and ensuring the integration of the roles of both men and women without discrimination, in line with the belief of the UAE’s leadership in the key role of women since the country’s establishment in 1971.

She also affirmed the UAE’s commitment to reinforcing the rights of both women and men and strengthening them in all areas, including social, economic and political areas, adding that the UAE’s constitution stipulates that all citizens are equal before the law.

She then stressed the importance of parliamentary engagement in the implementation of CEDAW to empower and protect women.

Al Suwaidi advised the IPU to participate in CEDAW, to raise awareness about the convention and produce related guidelines for parliamentarians.
