Minister chairs urban policy committee meeting

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Local Administration Tawfiq Krishan on Tuesday chaired a meeting of the Steering Committee to adopt the Jordanian National Urban Policy to finalize the contents of urban policy, its foundations, objectives, and benefits and implementation. During the meeting, Krishan said that Jordan is in the process of establishing a national institutional dimension and a reference point for ministries and institutions operating within the framework of urban development, municipal services and public transportation. He pointed to the need to amend the legislation organizing cities and villages, underlining the importance of ensuring the implementation of this legislation to address random housing, transportation problems, the environment, and other issues. Mayor of Amman Yousef Shawarbeh said adopting this policy, along with the necessary legislation, is a right for future generations. Dima Abu Dhiab, the National Program Coordinator for the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), lauded the Jordanian government’s efforts in the preparation, formulation, coordination and follow-up of the national urban policy.
