National Workshop on Child Protection opens at GWU in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: The National Workshop on child protection got underway today at the General Women’s Union headquarters in Abu Dhabi under the patronage of HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of GWU and of Family Development Foundation.

The workshop organised by the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood in association with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research and the Ministry of Interior is one of the important projects at the national level to ensure safe and secure life for children.

An analytical study on children in the UAE conducted by the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood in cooperation with UNICEF and 45 other federal and local entities proved the need for a comprehensive survey and assessment of the system of child protection in the country.

The workshop builds on the fact that child protection is an essential part in the country’s strategy of empowerment and is enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child to achieve the Millennium Development Goals aimed at providing and ensuring a safe environment for children.

The project aims to assess policies and programs offered by various institutions operating in the country at the federal, local and NGO levels in the field of child protection to identify their strengths and weaknesses. This will help propose a standardized work mechanism on a national scale that is compatible with country’s visions with respect to the issues of childhood, and in conformity with its international obligations in this area.
