One Person Killed, Others Injured Due to Forest Fires in Northeastern S. Korea

One person was killed and 16 others were injured, while hundreds were evacuated as a result of the forest fires that hit the coastal city of Gangneung in northeastern South Korea.

The Korean (Yonhap) News Agency quoted the local authorities as saying that one person was killed, 16 others were injured, and 649 people were evacuated, while about 70 houses and buildings were destroyed and 379 hectares of forests were burned.

In addition, the designation makes Gangneung, 168 kilometers east of Seoul, eligible for the government’s financial support in recovery work, relief funds for victims and other benefits.

A forest fire broke out on Tuesday on a hill in Gangneung District and quickly spread to residential areas in the area due to strong winds.
