South Korean President Asserts Improvement Signs in South Korea-Japan Ties

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said that his country’s ties with Japan are exhibiting signs of improvement.

The South Korean President said in a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, following their meeting in Seoul today that the current international situation and complex world crisis necessitate South Korean-Japanese cooperation and coexistence, for the sake of both countries’ interests and for the sake of world peace and prosperity.

He also hoped that the Japanese Prime Minister’s visit would serve as a big step towards future cooperation between both countries.

For his part, Kishida said that his visit to Seoul comes within the framework of improving ties between Japan and South Korea, indicating that the two countries have conducted various dynamic discussions since the South Korean President’s visit to Japan in March.

On North Korean nuclear threats, Yeol and Kishida both agreed that Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs pose a serious threat to peace.

Fumio Kishida is the first Japanese Prime Minister to visit South Korea in 12 years.

South Korea and Japan hope to leave their differences behind, particularly the unresolved issues that go back to the colonial era, when South Korea was under Japanese imperial rule from 1910 until 1945.

South Korea’s President had set the path to improve bilateral relations when he did a historic visit to Japan in March.
