Special Olympics: Crowning the empowerment of people of determination

ABU DHABI, The UAE will crown its years of diligent efforts and planning to provide the ideal environment for integrating people of determination into the community when it hosts the “Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019”.

The hosting of the Special Olympics reflects the efforts of the UAE Government to assist people of determination, which improved its services offered to them and helped develop their capabilities and achieve their social integration.

The Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, re-named persons with disabilities, in April 2017, as ‘people of determination’, to represent the country’s efforts to integrate them into the community, especially in terms of education, employment and social participation.

The UAE guarantees equality between people of determination and other people and prohibits discrimination due to their special needs in all its economic and social development legislation, programmes and policies.

The UAE adopted many laws that aim to provide the appropriate environment for people of determination to receive all the rights and services, such as the right to receive monthly assistance according to current federal laws.

The number of people of determination employed in various sectors around the country also rose to over 1,700.

The Ministry of Community Development launched an initiative to integrate people with special needs, the ‘Atheer Card’, which provides them with services and exclusive privileges.

As part of its 2020 Strategy, the Dubai Government launched the ‘Appropriate Environment for People of Determination Project’, which is a joint project between the General Secretariat of the Executive Council, the Community Development Authority, the Roads and Transport Authority, and the Dubai Municipality.

It also launched a five-year plan to enable people of determination to use and access buildings, sidewalks, pedestrian crossing, roads, buses, trains, maritime and air transport facilities by 2020, which will make Dubai among the best cities in the world in terms of providing disabled access, in line with the UAE Vision 2021.

Dubai is also developing an integrated strategy for people of determination with Abu Dhabi while the Zayed Higher Organisation for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs, ZHO, announced 15 initiatives, which include projects related to employing people of determination, hosting international championships, and combatting childhood obesity.
