The Foreign Ministry clarifies the legal difference with Kuwait over maritime borders

Baghdad The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a clarification on the legal difference with Kuwait regarding the interpretation of the maritime border between the two countries, stating: “The legal interpretation is in favor of Iraq.”

“There is a legal difference with Kuwait in interpreting a maritime border issue between the two countries,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed al-Sahaf said in a statement. “It is in the interpretation of a border site we call it (platform), and the Kuwaiti side calls it (island) as the baseline adopted in the demarcation of maritime borders between the two countries at a certain point after pillar 162 “.

He pointed out that “there are negotiations between the two countries on the specific point of view, and Iraq has already expressed its objection to the Government of Kuwait any unilateral construction, and preceded the recent Iraqi action to send Kuwait letters to the United Nations address its position in this regard; sending two identical letters to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the President of the Security Council on the subject to explain the legal interpretation of the situation.

“We believe that legal interpretation is in our favor.”
