UAE participates in the 2nd Arab – European Foreign Ministers’ Conference

Cairo: Minister of Foreign Trade Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi led the UAE delegation at the 2nd Conference of the European and Arab foreign ministers taking place at the Arab League headquarters in the Egyptian capital.

The conference aims to bolster cooperation between EU and the Arab countries.

UAE delegation attending the conference includes UAE Ambassador in Cairo and Permanant Representative to the Arab League, Mohammed bin Nekhaira Al Dhahiri, Assistant Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Dr. Tarek Haidan, Director of Arab Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Salem Alqattam Zaabi and Director of international security cooperation at the ministry Mahsh AlHamli.

Twenty-two foreign ministers from Arab League member states and 27 European Union ministers, along with EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton attend the meeting.

The Arab and EU foreign ministers in Malta in their first meeting earlier in 2008. The current meeting represents the effort to enhance the continuity of this cooperation. It is the first time the Arab League is hosting EU foreign ministers.

The ministers participating in the meeting seek to tackle the way forward on EU-Arab cooperation on humanitarian aid and counterterrorism efforts. They will also discuss, among other things, various other issues, including the Syrian conflict, the Middle East peace process, Maritime piracy, the situations in Yemen, the three UAE Islands occupied by Iran and the need to rid Middle East of nuclear weapons.
