Algerian government has announced the allocation of USD 225 million annually for natural disasters response.
During the opening of the International Colloquium on Seismic Risk Reduction in Algiers, Algeria’s Prime Minister Aymen Benabderrahmane said that 70 percent of the funds would be directed towards facing to floods risks.
He pointed out that although the floods are at the top of the list of disasters that have occurred in Algeria since 1950, the earthquakes were the most costly in economic terms, amounting to nearly USD 10 billion, as well as in terms of the number of human losses estimated at 6,771 deaths, with over 1.4 million people affected.
Like many countries, Algeria was proactive in putting in place the necessary measures to revitalize its legal arsenal and means of intervention in a way that keeps pace with development in various fields, especially urban expansion, industrial and commercial fabric, as well as the major facilities that have been constructed, Benabderrahmane stressed.
